At the Prospect Mining Awards, on a night filled with celebration and recognition, Roy Watterson was honoured with the Lifetime Achievement Award. His contributions to the mining industry continue to be remembered and celebrated, and his legacy lives on through the businesses he helped shape and the countless lives he influenced along the way.

Roy’s story began in 1982 when he left Ireland for Australia to join the team at Finlay, a subsidiary of the Terex Company. He started as a Sales Manager but quickly proved himself, earning promotions and recognition along the way. His journey eventually led him to the role of Managing Director, showcasing his leadership and forward-thinking approach.

Roy’s thirst for innovation was evident when he expanded Finlay’s horizons in 1985, venturing into new markets like Papua New Guinea and Indonesia. This move strengthened the company’s presence in the Asia-Pacific region and set the stage for even more significant achievements.

In 1989, Roy made a bold move by taking Finlay into the Chinese market, with a specific focus on the coal industry. His strategic vision allowed the company to tap into China’s booming coal sector, marking a significant milestone in his career.

But Roy’s journey didn’t stop there. In 1995, he started Lincom Group, quickly establishing it as a major equipment supplier to the Chinese coal industry. During this period, he also represented several Australian businesses like Nepean Conveyors and Universal Drill Rigs.

Under Roy’s guidance, Lincom Group became a key player in the quarry and mining equipment industry, also making a lasting impact in Australia and Papua New Guinea. In 2012, his passion for expansion led Lincom Group to venture into New Zealand and the Pacific Islands, with Southern Queensland as a pivotal base.

Mark Watterson, Lincom Group’s Hire and Transport Manager, and Lindsey Watterson, Lincom Group’s Sales Support Manager proudly accepted the award, “Dad taught us three important values: family should always come first, build strong and genuine relationships with the customers, and if an opportunity knocks, grab them with both hands. At Lincom these 3 principles are close to our heart.”

Roy Watterson’s story is a testament to what one person can achieve with passion, vision, and unwavering determination.
