Every October, businesses across Australia come together for National Safe Work Month, an initiative led by Safe Work Australia to raise awareness of workplace health and safety and encourage everyone to take an active role in preventing workplace injuries and illness.
This year’s campaign, ‘Safe work is for life’, highlights the importance of protecting workers’ lives, health and future. It is a powerful reminder that workplace safety goes beyond preventing accidents; it is about creating safer workplaces where people can thrive throughout their working lives.
In an industry where heavy machinery, complex equipment, and demanding environments are part of everyday operations, we understand safety cannot be an afterthought. It must be at the forefront of every decision, every task and every working day.
From our workshops and warehouses to customer sites and offices, safety is a shared responsibility. It is about recognising risks, looking out for one another and creating an environment where everyone feels confident to speak up, ask questions and make safer choices.
Bringing our people together
To mark National Safe Work Month, our branches brought their teams together for an afternoon tea and a safety quiz that sparked some surprisingly fierce competition.
There was plenty of friendly rivalry, a few laughs and some serious determination to get the answers right. But beyond the competitive spirit, it gave us a chance to bring safety conversations into a relaxed setting and remind everyone of the important role they play in keeping our workplaces safe.
Building a strong safety culture isn’t just about policies, procedures, and protective equipment. It is also about people, communication and the everyday decisions that make a difference.
Safe work is for life, not just October
While National Safe Work Month allows us to shine a spotlight on workplace health and safety, our commitment does not begin or end in October.
We believe that a strong safety culture is built through consistent action, personal accountability and a willingness to keep learning and improving.
It means taking the time to do things properly, identifying hazards before they become incidents and never becoming complacent, no matter how familiar a task may seem.
The decisions we make today can have a lasting impact on our health, wellbeing and future. Every precaution taken, every hazard reported and every conversation about safety contributes to a workplace where people are better protected.
Most importantly, it means recognising that everyone has a part to play. Whether someone is operating equipment, servicing a machine, managing a warehouse or working behind a desk, their contribution to a safer workplace matters.
National Safe Work Month is a timely reminder that safety is not simply a box to tick. It is a shared responsibility, a mindset we keep strengthening, and a commitment we make to one another every day.
